We are writing to solicit applications for the fifth cohort of our Nigerian Cancer Research Training (NCAT) Program, jointly supported by an NIH D43 Award and the Oak Foundation. This program seeks to expand cancer research training within ARGO-participating institutions. The program employs a multi-pronged training approach, utilizing workshops, coursework, hands-on research, and mentorship.
We have a competitive selection of 12 Clinical Research Scholars per year using an established application process and a committee of MSK and Nigerian faculty. Utilizing online and in-person training developed by GCRT-ARGO, we will provide focused education in the fundamentals of clinical research. The program is structured so there is an intensive first year with a heavy research skills training component and then two
subsequent years which include mentorship, team science training, and opportunities for pilot grants.
We will offer the following training:
- Harvard Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (PPCR) certificate course: This is a comprehensive distance-learning 9-month course that covers the fundamentals of clinical research. Upon completion, participants will be adept in designing and managing clinical trials, performing statistical analyses, and navigating the publication process. This course is time-intensive, with weekly 3-hour lectures and an additional 15-20 hours per week dedicated on assignments and other activities.
- The Responsible Conduct of Research Course (RCR) offered through MSKCC. Participants are required to complete the online training modules and participate in a series of virtual workshop and discussion sessions for a total of eight (8) hours of instruction.
- There will be at least two in-person workshops per year. Workshops will be held at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and will cover a range of topics including Statistics for Researchers, Manuscript Writing and Publishing, and Preparing a Scientific Talk.
- Each scholar will be assigned mentors from Nigeria and North America
- Monthly virtual meetings with research topics and presentations
- Participation in Team Science
- Opportunities for pilot grant funding and additional trainings
Application Criteria
- Open to all physician, nursing, social sciences, and basic sciences fields involved in cancer research.
- Consultant with Fellowship of relevant post-graduate medical college or Faculty lecturer (PhD).
- Applicant must be a Senior lecturer or below and have been employed at an ARGO-affiliated institution for 5-years.
- Applicant maintains a position in a ARGO affiliated institution for the years of the NCAT program and one year beyond
- Approval letter from applicant’s departmental leadership
- Commitment to remaining with the program for the entire duration (~3 years)
